First-best collusion without communication
نویسنده
چکیده
I study a 2-bidder infinitely repeated IPV first-price auction without transfers, communication, or public randomization, where each bidder’s valuation can assume, in each of the (statistically independent) stage games, one of three possible values. If the probability of the high valuation is sufficiently large and the medium valuation is between one third and one half of the high valuation, then the following is true: for every > 0 there is a nondegenerate interval ∆( ) ⊂ (0, 1), such that if the bidders’ discount factor belongs to ∆( ), then there exists a Perfect Public Equilibrium with payoffs -close to the first-best payoffs.

Collusion through communication in auctions
We study the extent to which communication can serve as a collusion device in one-shot firstand second-price sealed-bid auctions. Theoretically, second-price auctions are more fragile to collusion through communication than first-price auctions. In an array of laboratory experiments we vary the amount of interactions (communication and/or transfers without commitment) available to bidders. We f...
متن کاملPartial Communication and Collusion with Demand Uncertainty
This paper analyzes the role of communication between firms in an infinitely repeated Bertrand game in which firms receive an imperfect private signal of a common value i.i.d. demand shock. Communication allows firms to coordinate on the most collusive price and it eliminates the possibility of undetectable price cuts. It is shown that firms can use stochastic intertemporal market sharing as a ...
متن کاملCollusion in private value ascending price auctions
We investigate the effects of bid improvement rules and bidder value asymmetry on bidder collusion in experimental ascending price auctions without communication. We find that the strict bid improvement rule and private values are not always sufficient to break collusion among well-motivated bidders. Collusion still occurs as long as bidder gains from collusion are high. JEL classification code...
متن کاملModeling Tacit Collusion in Auctions
We study tacit collusion in repeated auctions in which bidders can only observe past winners and not their bids. We adopt a stringent interpretation of tacit collusion as collusion without communication about strategies that we model as a symmetry restriction on repeated game strategies: Strategies cannot discriminate among initially nameless bidders until they have become named through winning...
متن کاملCollusion and Equilibrium Selection in Auctions*
We study bidder collusion and test the power of payoff dominance as an equilibrium selection principle in experimental multi-object ascending auctions. In these institutions low-price collusive equilibria exist along with competitive payoff-inferior equilibria. Achieving payoff-superior collusive outcomes requires complex strategies that, depending on the environment, may involve signaling, mar...
